St. James's Park Hotels

St. James’s Park is no longer recognisable from its origins as a leper hospital and burial ground. Nowadays, it’s a green and pleasant royal park occupying space between Westminster, the home of British government, and Buckingham Palace, the home of the monarchy. It’s come a long way. Hotels near St. James’s Park are few in number, perhaps because the sheer volume of government buildings doesn’t really allow for private property. They’re also generally not quite as prestigious as you might imagine, the five star hotels mostly being clustered northwest towards Hyde Park. I’m not sure why, but it could be to do with the relative scarcity of shops and restaurants, and the proliferation of giant stone buildings that you’re not allowed to go inside.

Of the hotels near St. James’s Park, Jolly St. Ermin’s is the closest to the station, and now looks distinctly unreal after a £30 million facelift. This four star hotel is large and elegant, with amenities including a courtyard, library and a huge and glamorous ballroom. The hotel’s 331 rooms and suites blend Victorian and modern décor to pleasing effect.

More prestigious still is one of the area’s only five star hotels, 51 Buckingham Gate. The 86 luxurious suites range from one bedroom to a whopping nine, and the hotel also features its own spa, an award-winning courtyard and a Michelin-starred restaurant. On the opposite end of the spectrum, the Wellington Hotel is a good budget bed and breakfast option. Somehow still owning only one star despite a prime position in a peaceful enclave in Westminster and being housed in an attractive Edwardian building, the Wellington has reasonably comfortable rooms, though bathrooms are shared.
