Shoreditch is certainly one of London's most recognisable and unique areas, acting as a haven for artists and the creative industries and a popular home among minor celebrities. It can all seem a bit bohemian and pretentious to the outside visitor and the enjoyment of your visit will almost certainly depend on whether you put graffiti in the 'art' column or the 'vandalism' column. But, if you let it, it will truly seduce you and inspire your creative energies. The area is located in central London, just north of the city of London and primary business area, making it a suitable location for leisure travelers and business people alike. In somewhat of a contrast to its ethos most of the hotels in the area are rather comfortable and luxurious, though there are a few budget options and the true spirit of Shoreditch can always be experienced by staying in the University of Westminster's Alexander Fleming Hall of Residence! Shoreditch High Street tube station is on the London Overground, though more comprehensive services can be found at the nearby Liverpool Street and Old Street stations.
The site was once home to England's first ever playhouse, though this is now long gone and all that remains today is a commemorative plaque on Curtain Road. The Geffrye Museum is approximately a 10 minute walk from the station and is a museum of the home, featuring period living rooms and creative classes for children. The area doesn't have a large amount of popular tourist attractions (though some would call it an attraction in itself) but the Spitalfields Market just south of the station is full of fashionable shops and vintage clothing outlets and is well worth a look.
Shoreditch is nicely epitomised in The Book Club, which is a bar and club that hosts live music, art exhibitions and (obviously) countless games of ping pong. In the mornings it serves a range of breakfasts including Full English and Vegetarian Full English as well as some more unusual options, which are a great alternative to the standard hotel breakfast. If you like nothing more than to relax in an independent little cafe and slowly sip your Café Bombón then you will find yourself right at home in Shoreditch. There are also a number of unusual restaurants serving a range of international cuisines, such as Les Trois Garcons, which is an incredibly chic venue with a French menu and a penchant for taxidermy.
By now you're probably not expecting Shoreditch to be a typical night out in London and you'd be right. Clubbers will not want to miss Club Aquarium, which is renowned for having its own swimming pool! The safety conscious reader is probably trying to work out just how many breaches of health and safety this must incur, but don't worry, a lifeguard is on hand at all times. Shoreditch has everything from basement cocktail bars to Victorian themed pubs to all night clubs. If traditional is what you're looking for, then this isn't the most suitable holiday destination.
