Shepherd’s Bush is a primarily residential area west of central London. Pleasant and safe, though less affluent than Notting Hill and Holland Park to the east, Shepherd’s Bush is a relaxed suburb with strong transport links to the centre. As well as this easy access to the rest of London, Shepherd’s Bush has a few other attractions to recommend it. Shepherd’s Bush Green is a nice green space in the centre of the area, and the Westfield Shopping Centre is Europe’s largest indoor shopping centre. I’ve never been, but it sounds impressive if you like shopping. Historically, the area is a great centre for pop culture. At one time the home of the BBC, Shepherd’s Bush also featured heavily in the origins of bands such as The Who, The Clash, The Sex Pistols and Bush, and more recently Pete Doherty of the The Libertines and Babyshambles. The is still a great centre for new theatre and live music, most notably at The Bush Theatre and the Shepherds Bush Empire respectively.
Shepherds Bush hotels range in quality, but are generally two or three star establishments, with a couple of four stars thrown in for good measure. Of those, probably the most interesting is the K West Hotel and Spa, a very modern relaxation destination designed with medicinal pleasure in mind. As you would expect, the hotel offers numerous opportunities to have various parts of you soaked, rubbed and otherwise fiddled with, though the bedrooms are extremely cosy, and the sense of design is unusually stylish.
Another good four star option is the Hilton London Kensington, which is not that different from any other Hilton, but its core values of luxurious rooms, great service and delicious food are complimented by a steam room. Alternatively the Grantly Hotel is one of the many two star hotels near Shepherd’s Bush, and is a decent bed and breakfast with rooms looking out over Shepherd’s Bush Green.
Shepherd’s Bush is served by five underground stations, including Shepherd’s Bush Market, Goldhawk Road, White City and Wood Lane. The most popular option is Shepherd’s Bush, which is on the Central Line in Zone 2.
