There has been a theatre at Sadler’s Wells for over 300 years, named for the medicinal waters that were discovered on the grounds. Early entertainment included jugglers, rope-dancers, wrestlers and even a singing duck. The theatre went on to be known in the 19th century for pantomime, light opera and variety as well as regular drama like the plays of Shakespeare. Sadler’s Wells now specialises in dance including ballet, hip hop, contemporary dance and flamenco. Opera and theatre can also be seen here.
There are bars on every level which serve drinks, sandwiches and snacks. Sweets and ice creams are also on sale. The auditorium has a capacity of 1,560 over 3 levels.
There is step free access to the building on Rosebery Avenue through automatic doors and a lift to all levels in the foyer. There are 15 spaces for wheelchair users in the Stalls and 6 spaces in the 1st Circle. Adapted toilets can be found beside the right hand entrance to the Stalls, by the lifts on the 1st and 2nd Circles, at basement and mezzanine levels.
The nearest tube station is Angel (250m). There is a car park behind the theatre with a free space for disabled patrons.
