The Royal Court is dedicated to presenting new work from writers in the UK and around the world. It has been described in the New York Times as “the most important theatre in Europe”. The building dates back to 1888 and was acquired by the English Stage Company in 1956. One of its early productions was John Osborne’s Look Back in Anger, a play which expressed the frustration of the younger generation and came to be seen as a turning point in British theatre.
The challenging plays put on here often brought the company into conflict with the censors, and eventually led to the abolition of the Lord Chamberlain Office in 1968. It still seeks to present provocative and intelligent plays to the stage today, and hopes to create the classics of the future.
The building has air conditioning and a café bar. Pastries and baguettes are available from 11am to 11pm and a more substantial café menu from 12pm to 8pm. Alcoholic and soft drinks are served. The upstairs theatre has a capacity of 85 and the seating is unreserved. The downstairs theatre seats 380 over 3 levels, and you can stand and watch the performance at the side of the Circle for just 10p.
Disabled access to the theatre is on the right hand side of the building through easy-open doors. There is a lift to all levels inside. There are 3 spaces for wheelchair users in the Stalls and one in the Circle in the downstairs theatre. In the upstairs theatre there are 2 spaces for wheelchair users. There are disabled toilets near each of these. There is an infra-red sound amplification system in both auditoria and an induction loop in the downstairs theatre as well.
Sloane Square tube station is right next to the theatre. A limited amount of parking can be found in the surrounding streets after 6.30 pm.
