About Prince Edward Theatre

The Prince Edward was built in 1930 and was at first supposed to be a place for musicals, drama, revue and film.  After 5 years, it changed into a dance and cabaret hall, and it later became a private club for military men during the war.  It didn’t become a live public theatre again until 1978, when it presented Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Evita for the first time.  It’s now a theatre for musicals, and the popular Abba production Mamma Mia also debuted here in 1999.

The venue has 5 licensed bars and seats 1,618 over 3 levels.  The front row of the Stalls is a bit uncomfortable for viewing due to the high stage and the very back rows are affected by overhang from the tier above.  This is also the case at the back of the Dress Circle, and there are slip seats at this level with a sidelined view.  The Grand Circle is very high and doesn’t offer great views, especially in the back section.

Disabled access to the building is through the EXIT door on Greek Street.  This leads into a box, where there are 2 spaces for wheelchair users.  An adapted toilet is in the foyer and the auditorium has a Sennheiser sound system for the hard of hearing.

The nearest tube station is Leicester Square (300m).  Parking can be found at the Westminster City Council car park at China Town and Poland Street, or the NCP at Wardour Street on Denmark Street.
