The Piccadilly Theatre opened in 1928. It switched back and forth between being a live performance space and a cinema. It has hosted a wide variety of entertainment over the years including revues, comedy and Disney films. In 1942, the curse of the Scottish Play seemed to come true when 4 cast members died, a designer committed suicide and the theatre was hit by a German bomb, during a production of Macbeth. Less dramatic were the successful productions of Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? in 1963 and A Streetcar Named Desire in 1974. Recently, the theatre has been staging musicals.
The building is air conditioned and has 4 licensed bars. It has a capacity of 1,232 over 3 levels. The Stalls and Royal Circle offer excellent views, except in the very back rows which are just slightly affected by the overhang from the tiers above. The Grand Circle is quite high and distant from the stage, which is reflected in the price of the tickets.
Disabled access is through the side entrance on Sherwood Street, into a box which has space for 2 wheelchair users. Another 2 wheelchair spaces are in Row A of the Royal Circle. An adapted toilet is available and there is an infra-red sound system in the auditorium for hearing aid users.
The nearest tube station is Piccadilly (150m). The council has a car park at Poland Street and the NCP at Denman Street and Brewer Street.
