Piccadilly Circus is a junction in central London, recognisable to millions by its huge neon signs. The junction is often hectic, but provides immediate access to much of central London, including Soho, Oxford Street, Regents Street and Hyde Park. Trafalgar Square, Leicester Square and Covent Garden are also not far away. Piccadilly Circus is an excellent if sometimes pricey centre of retail, and its shops include exotic chocolatiers and Japanese confectionary venues, as well as London’s largest bookshop and Fortnum & Mason, arguably the capital’s finest food shop.
For Piccadilly hotels, one of the best budget options is the faded grandeur of the Regent Palace Hotel. This huge two star establishment offers remarkably cheap rates for the centre of London, and the rooms are generally comfortable. Bathrooms are generally shared, and it has been known to get very cold in winter.
The closest of Piccadilly’s numerous luxury accommodations is the excellent Le Meridien Piccadilly, a stylish, expertly designed monochrome mansion. Everything in this hotel is exceptionally beautiful, but special praise should go to its private swimming pool and the airy terrace bar with views over central London.
For genuine budget travellers, Piccadilly Circus is also home to perhaps London’s best placed hostel. The Piccadilly Backpackers Hostel, like any other, asks that you share your room if not your bunk with up to seven other people, but prices are as low as you’re likely to find in this area.
Piccadilly hotels are served by a tube station which lies on the Piccadilly Line between Green Park and Leicester Square, and on the Bakerloo Line between Oxford Circus and Charing Cross.
Situated immediately below Piccadilly Circus itself, with exits at each corner, Piccadilly tube station was opened in 1906. The word 'circus' comes from the Latin for 'circle' and refers to the circular space at the junction of a street. It is a convenient stopping off point for numerous Piccadilly hotels, restaurants and attractions. Neighbouring districts include Covent Garden and Leicester Square. Piccadilly Circus tube station is in Zone 1 and serves the Piccadilly and Bakerloo lines. Its adjacent stations are Green Park, Leicester Square, Charing Cross and Oxford Circus.
The London Trocadero is popular with tourists, families and teenagers and is in fact the busiest entertainment venue in London. It is an enormous complex, filled with shops, places to eat and drink, the UGC cinema, Madame Tussaud's Rock Circus and much more. One of the Trocadero's more unusual attractions is a display of items rescued from the Titanic. Piccadilly tube station is also a convenient stop off point for London's 'Theatreland', where the term 'West End theatre' has become synonymous with top quality professional performance. Art lovers must visit the Royal Academy which has more than one million visitors every year, who come to admire the famous annual summer exhibition and outstanding permanent collection.
Zeta bar is a fashionable bar, located on the ground floor of the London Hilton, one of most luxurious Piccadilly hotels. It is well known for its cool Feng Shui inspired interior, fabulous cocktails and DJ sets. The Rose and Crown is a more traditional style pub which is friendly, not too expensive and close to several good Piccadilly hotels. Chowki offers Indian cuisine at reasonable prices, focussing on a different region every month. Greens Restaurant and Oyster Bar has become a London favourite, specialising in wonderful fish dishes. One of the first Sushi restaurants in London, Mitsukoshi has been going for almost two decades and continues to be a favourite with health conscious diners.
