About Open Air Theatre

The Open Air Theatre is in the middle of Regent’s Park.  It’s been there since 1932 and puts on shows during its annual 15 week season.  It first became famous for its productions of Shakespeare.  Some of the stars to have performed on this unusual stage are Vivien Leigh, Dulcie Grey, Jeremy Irons, Zoe Wanamaker and Ralph Fiennes.  These days, you can also see musical theatre, concerts and children’s plays.  The venue is operated by the New Shakespeare Company, which is a charity.

The theatre seats 1,240 in allocated chairs, unless you have bought a ticket for the grass bank, which is available on the day of the performance.  The seating is raked but there is no roof so you will be open to the elements and should come prepared for the unpredictable British weather!  You can pre-order a picnic to eat in the park; hot and cold meals and barbecue food are also available and the venue has a licensed bar.

There are spaces in the auditorium for wheelchair users and all facilities are fully accessible.  There is an FM assisted listening system for hearing aid users.  Some performances are captioned.

The theatre is about 10 minutes’ walk from Baker Street tube station.  You should enter Regent’s Park via York Gate, then follow the road until you see a pair of black and gold gates.  This is the Inner Circle.  Continue on the path through the gates and turn left before the water fountain to reach the entrance to the Open Air Theatre.  If you’re arriving by car, you can park on the Inner Circle.  This is pay and display until 6.30pm.
