Old Vic Hotels

The Old Vic was built in 1818 and was at that time named after its patron, Prince Leopold of Saxe-Coburg.  It began staging variety shows but moved on to drama, and was noted for its productions of Shakespeare.  It changed its name to the Royal Victorian Theatre in honour of the young Princess Victoria in 1833 and in time came to be known colloquially as the Old Vic.  These days, it presents classic and modern drama.  The Hollywood actor Kevin Spacey became artistic director in 2003.

The theatre has a capacity of 1,067 over 3 levels.  Due to the slope of the stalls, the best view is from row J and up to row T, after which some seats are affected by pillars.  The Dress Circle only has 5 rows.  The back 3 are slightly affected by overhang from the tier above.  The Upper Circle offers clear views throughout.  All box seats have severely restricted views.  The auditorium is air conditioned and there is a licensed bar on the premises serving snacks and sandwiches.

There is a ramped entrance into the foyer from the street and a space for one wheelchair user in the Stalls.  An adapted toilet is to the left of the side entrance.  The auditorium has a Sennheiser infra-red sound amplification system with in-ear and loop units available.

The nearest tube station is Waterloo (200m).  There’s a blue badge parking space in Webber Street and an NCP at Coin Street.
