Immortalised by the film of the same name, Notting Hill is an affluent residential area northwest of Central London. While the Richard Curtis film has often been criticised for presenting an overwhelmingly white, luvvie, upper-class version of London, the film and the district have almost come to define each other. Notting Hill is wealthy, pleasant, charmingly bland, with pretensions to bohemia but no confrontational instinct. For holidaymakers, it’s a great base. Close to the centre but with a much more healthy, clean and relaxed atmosphere. The fact that it is the cradle of the new conservatism is an unfortunate by-product.
Notting Hill Hotels satisfy a good range of demands. There aren’t many five star establishments in the area, but every other type is well-represented. Closest to the station is the four star Abbey Court Hotel, a boutique residence in a grand Victorian townhouse. Rooms range from frilly, plush four-poster affairs to cosy single bedrooms reminiscent of your old bedroom at your mum’s house. All of the rooms feature en suite bathrooms with Italian marble whirlpool baths.
Alternatively, you might try the three star Comfort Inn Notting Hill for comfortable, relaxed accommodation set in a converted terrace of traditional Notting Hill townhouses, or the Travel House Hotel, which offers budget rooms of a decent size, with Portobello Road Market on your doorstep.
Notting Hill Gate station is on the southwest corner of Notting Hill, and services the Central, Circle and District Lines.
Since Notting Hill Gate tube station opened in 1900, this lively and bohemian area has become famous as the location of the hit film Notting Hill. Neighbouring districts include Kensington and Hyde Park. Notting Hill Gate tube station is on the boundary of Zones 1 & 2 and serves the Central, District and Circle lines. Its adjacent stations are Holland Park, Queensway, High Street Kensington and Bayswater.
Portobello Road Market is one of the top ten most popular tourist attractions in London. On weekdays, the market serves the community with fresh produce and food stalls. It's on Saturdays however, that the famous second hand and antique sections are open, with more than 2,000 dealers vying for trade. To snag the best bargains, make sure to go in the morning before the worst of the crowds.
For over 40 years, the August Bank Holiday has seen the Notting Hill Carnival provide spectacular entertainment, complete with steel drum bands, DJs, breathtaking floats and countless stalls. From its beginnings as a small festival organised by the area's West Indian community, the Notting Hill Carnival has grown into one of London's most vibrant and colourful annual events. The Notting Hill Carnival actively welcomes tourists and there are plenty of hotels near Notting Hill should you wish to stay for this.
The Hillgate is a busy pub, which is popular with locals for its good pub grub. A winner of the Cask Ale Marque award, The Prince Albert has been a feature of Notting Hill life for some time. Relax with a beer and watch the world go by through the windows which look towards Portobello Road.
The diverse and sometimes eccentric nature of Notting Hill is illustrated in the variety of restaurants on offer. Try De Amicis for traditional Italian fare served with warmth and flair. Portobello Gold offers everything from cream teas to barbeques on the roof. Diners at Twelfth House can even opt to have their tarot cards read while they eat.
