Mudchute Station is on the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) on the Isle of Dogs, in Tower Hamlets, East London. It’s in Travelcard Zone 2. It opened in 1987, along the route of an old Victorian railway line, and the station was rebuilt in 1999. It was originally supposed to be named after the nearby Millwall Dock, but it was changed to avoid confusion with Millwall Football Club. Instead it was named after “The Mudchute”, a hilly area where soil and silt were dumped during the excavation of the dock, which turned it into a fertile wildlife habitat.
“The Mudchute” developed over time into a park and a city farm. It’s a 32 acre site with grassy areas for games and picnics as well as a horse riding arena where you can have lessons. There are over 200 animals and fowl on the farm, some of which can be petted.
You can also explore the Millwall Docks, which were built in Victorian times and used by ships carrying grain and timber. They have now found a new purpose as a place for the local community to get involved in watersports and sailing. Film fans will note that the docks featured in the James Bond movie “The World Is Not Enough”, where they were the setting for some spectacular boat stunts.
Just to the north is the landmark tower One Canada Square, in the business district of Canary Wharf. The surrounding area has a wealth of shops, restaurants, bars and leisure facilities, as well as offices.
