Mile End is in Tower Hamlets, East London. It’s popular with City workers due to its easy access into the financial district of London, and relatively low rents. The area also has a large student population, as it contains the main campus of Queen Mary, University of London. Mile End is not known for its nightlife and although there a few pubs and restaurants, those looking for a good night out would have to venture into the centre of London. However, there are a number of parks nearby where you can enjoy outdoor activities during the day. Tower Hamlets is one of the poorer boroughs in London and it’s not the most glamorous place to stay; however, that means you can find some really good prices on Mile End hotels.

Mile End Tube Station is in Tower Hamlets, East London. It’s served by 3 lines – the Hammersmith & City, District and Central Lines. It’s in Travelcard Zone 2. The station opened in 1902 and was electrified in 1905. It is named after the Mile End Road, which was an important route for travellers in olden times. Here, they would pass a milestone telling them that there was just one mile to go until the end of their journey at the gates of the City of London.
Mile End Park is beside the station. It was built around a 1940’s plan to have green spaces connecting London to the Thames. Much of the parkland was formerly used for industrial purposes and its 90 acres is strung out over a wide area, separated by roads and railways. There are events going on throughout the year including festivals and children’s activities.
On the western edge of the park you can find the Victorian buildings that used to house Dr Barnardo’s Ragged School. The warehouses were reopened as a museum in 1990.
To the north is the much larger Victoria Park, so there are lots of green spaces to be explored in this part of London. Running through the area is the Regent’s Canal, once an industrial waterway, and now a peaceful and picturesque place for a walk or cycle ride.
Mile End Stadium has athletics facilities, football pitches and basketball courts. It is being refurbished, with the addition of a 25 metre swimming pool.
