The current Lyceum Theatre opened in 1834, although there had been an entertainment venue on the site for 70 years before that. A number of famous people have been involved in the Lyceum. Charles Dickens came in as a consultant on the first stage version of A Tale of Two Cities in 1860 and WS Gilbert of Gilbert and Sullivan produced his first professional play here in 1863. Bram Stoker managed the business side of the theatre in the late 19th century and the character of Dracula was inspired by the general manager he worked with at the time. From 1951 the Lyceum was a ballroom and music venue, before returning to use as a theatre in 1996. Since then it has concentrated on big stage musicals.
The auditorium has an air cooling system and there are 3 licensed bars on site. Sweets and ice creams are also available. The theatre seats 2,100 over 3 levels. In the Stalls, the last 2 seats in rows A-K have a slightly sidelined view. The back rows of the Stalls and the Dress Circle are affected by overhang from the tiers above. The seats on the outer edges of the Upper Circle also have a bit of a side view of the stage.
Disabled access is through the EXIT door on the left hand side as you face the theatre. There is an adapted toilet in the corridor leading to the Stalls and there are 8 spaces for wheelchair users. The auditorium has an infra-red sound amplification system for the hard of hearing.
The nearest tube stations are Covent Garden (300m) and Charing Cross (550m). There are 2 blue badge parking spaces outside the theatre and an NCP at Drury Lane for those arriving by car.
