Leicester Square Theatre opened in 2008 and is the West End’s newest theatre. The building dates back to 1953 and used to be a French Cultural Centre, and later, a dance hall. It was converted into a theatre in 2001 and first known as The Venue. It hosted the premiere of the Boy George musical Taboo, which then transferred to Broadway. It now puts on drama, comedy, music and cabaret shows. Some of the big names to have performed there recently are Joan Rivers, Roseanne Barr and Sandra Bernhard.
There are 2 performance spaces – the Main House, which has 2 bars and seats 420 auditorium style, and the Basement Theatre, which has another bar and cabaret-style seating for 60. Unfortunately, facilities for disabled patrons are poor, although there are plans to make improvements. At present, there is no wheelchair access, nor any hearing loop system.
The nearest tube station is, as you would expect, Leicester Square. For parking, you can try the NCP at Bedford Street and Upper St Martin’s Lane, or the Westminster City Council car park at Cambridge Circus.
