For connoisseurs of luxury and grandeur, there can be no finer destination in London than Knightsbridge, an ultra-expensive residential and retail area to the south of Hyde Park. Knightsbridge is famed for the palatial stature of its buildings and the incredibly high concentration of upmarket shops, restaurants and hotels. Some of the many nearby attractions include Hyde Park, the V&A Museum, the Natural History Museum, the Science Museum, the Royal Albert Hall, Buckingham Palace and the phantasmagorical department store Harrods. If you’re a traveller with money to burn, you may find a home away from home in one of the many Knightsbridge hotels.
Nearly all Knightsbridge hotels are fantastically expensive, and the vast majority hover around the four and five star mark. Closest five star property to the train station is the Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park, one of London’s most distinguished hotels offering views over Hyde Park and the Serpentine. The rooms are as lavishly furnished as you would expect, the spa is one of London’s most beautiful and relaxing, and the restaurants are sublime. Of particular note is the first London restaurant of legendary culinary scientist Heston Blumenthal, opening in January 2011.
Similarly luxurious but much smaller is the five star Capital Hotel, which is exquisitely decorated in an old-fashioned style. Its gourmet French cuisine has led to it being voted the UK’s best hotel for food by Conde Naste Traveller. For a slightly more affordable option, the three star Searcys Roof Garden is a lovely, relaxed choice housed in a Georgian townhouse and equipped with its titular roof garden, an oasis of calm just off the high street.
Knightsbridge tube station sits on the Piccadilly Line between South Kensington and Hyde Park Corner, and is only a few stops to London’s centre.
Ever since it opened, Knightsbridge tube station has been busy, thanks in part to its proximity to the famous Harrods department store. In 1934, it was expanded to add an additional entrance, which replaced the nearby, underused Brompton Road station. Knightsbridge station is convenient for many Knightsbridge hotels, bars and shops. Neighbouring districts include South Kensington, Chelsea and Belgravia. Knightsbridge tube station is in Zone 1 and serves the Piccadilly Line. Its adjacent stations are South Kensington and Hyde Park Corner.
Possibly the most famous shop in the world, Harrods is synonymous with luxury. You can find anything and everything in Harrods and no visit is complete without purchasing a little something to take home in that iconic green bag. Kids and adults will love the Science Museum which has interactive exhibits which illustrate humankind's technological achievements. The neighbouring Natural History Museum is famous for its dinosaur displays. The Victoria & Albert museum houses over four million objects from the past two centuries, including fine art, fashion, furniture and photographs. Entry to the Science Museum, the Natural History Museum and the Victoria & Albert Museum is free.
The Bunch of Grapes is a traditional pub which has retained many original Victorian features and serves good food. The Piccolo Bar has a more contemporary feel and serves a good selection of light meals. Follow some serious retail therapy with celebrity spotting at Harvey Nichols Fifth Floor Restaurant, where the Market Menu offers surprisingly good value for such swish surroundings. Foliage is a Michelin starred restaurant within in the sumptuous Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park Hotel, one of the grandest hotels in Knightsbridge. Dining here is an expensive, but never to be forgotten experience. Zia Teresa provides authentic, good value Italian cuisine, with some good lighter options for the health conscious.
