About King's Head Theatre

The King’s Head Theatre opened in 1970 and was the first pub theatre to have been founded in England since plays were performed in tavern yards in Shakespeare’s times.  The pub was built in the 19th century and the back room had been a boxing ring and pool hall before it was turned into a theatre.  Bits of interior décor, such as the red velvet curtains and theatre lamps, have been taken from other venues in London like the Theatre Royal Haymarket and Scala Theatre.

The aim of the King’s Head is to nurture new talent as well as showcasing established names.  Some people who have contributed in one way or another are Victoria Wood, Joanna Lumley and Hugh Grant.  It has put on a variety of musicals, plays, comedies and revues, many of which have transferred to the West End, including the Vagina Monologues in 2001 and F**king Men in 2009.

The venue is air conditioned and has access to the pub for buying drinks. The theatre seats just 140.

There is level access into the ground floor of the building and wheelchair spaces can be made available in the auditorium by arrangement.  There is an adapted toilet behind the bar.  The theatre has an induction loop system for hearing aid users.

The nearest tube stations are Angel and Highbury & Islington.  There is limited parking in the streets surrounding the theatre.
