Hoxton Tube station is located just north of Shoreditch and shares many of the area's key features and attributes, including its sometimes pretentious artistic chic and hipster style and an abundance of colourful graffiti art. If you arrive through Hoxton station then don't be put off by the rather drab scene that greets you - the north of the area might be culturally deprived, but the south is thriving with creativity. Located just north of the city of London, it's a short ride on the tube to get to some of the more popular central areas and business districts. Hoxton itself is on the London Overground, connecting it to the east of London, but for mere ease of accessing the city centre it's worth making the 10 minute walk to the neighbouring station of Old Street, which is on the Northern Line. As the north of Hoxton is a primarily residential district, most of the hotels are located south in the area of Shoreditch.
As far as London attractions go, Hoxton isn't home to any of the heavy hitters but many would argue that the area's strong artistic vibe is an attraction worth seeing in itself. The streets are completely littered with independent art galleries and fashionably niche bars and restaurants whilst Brick Lane is a historical institute and one of the city's oldest surviving roads. Continuing with the niche theme, Hoxton is in the vicinity of two museums - the Honourable Artillery Company Museum and the Geffrye Museum. The latter is an exhibition of period living rooms and right next to the station, whilst the latter takes just under 20 minutes to walk to. If you're willing to put in a little time on the tube then the nearest attractions, such as the Tower of London, Covent Garden and Oxford Street, are all around a 30 minute ride away.
True to the district's ethos of 'better is good', the most remarkable of the local restaurants is Rootmaster which is, naturally, a converted bright red double-decker bus serving vegan cuisine. It's perhaps the only bus in London where you don't have to worry about being caught without a ticket. The area is a particularly metropolitan one and so food comes in all manner of styles with several venues devoted to Vietnamese dishes. The region around Old Street is particularly fertile for eateries and the whole area of Hoxton is awash with cafes in which the district's population can be found discussing poetry and art.
Nights out in Hoxton are just as bizare as the rest of the area's culture. The Legion on Old Street is a must-visit for those with overactive vocal chords as it is home to Hot Breath Karaoke, which features Wheel of Fortune style karaoke games. Just around the corner is the only club in England to feature its own swimming pool. For the more meekly tempered there are many more traditional pubs and bars in the area, though beware that 'traditional' is relative! Nonetheless, bars like b@1, Bar Music Hall and The Residence are all fairly conventional cocktail bars and pubs with the ubiquitous cheesy music, and in recent years the area has become a popular nightlife spot for all kinds of Londoner and not just the creative crowd. On a Friday and Saturday night the Hoxton Square Bar & Grill is usually packed with drunken revellers. For an alternative to boozing guests can head a few tube stops south to Whitechapel where they can take a guided Jack The Ripper Tour or one of the many Ghost Walks.
