Highbury & Islington station is located, as its name indicates, where the areas of Highbury and Islington meet. The districts are located north of central London, with the fashionably artistic Shoreditch just to the south. Highbury and Islington are not noted for being tourist hotspots but are primarily residential areas and are ideal for those looking to stay somewhere quiet but not too far from the centre of London. Most of the hotels are situated towards the south in Islington and there's a good selection of cheap and more up-market properties. The station is serviced by the Victoria and Overground Lines.
Unless you're a fan of footie, Highbury and Islington don't really cater towards tourism. In fact, aside from the picturesque Highbury Fields, Emirates Stadium (roughly a 15 minute walk from the tube station), home of Arsenal FC, is the only notable attraction. Those willing to endure a short tube ride, however, will find popular destinations such as the Tower of London, the London Zoo and even Covent Garden roughly half an hour away. The colourful alternative district of Camden is even closer with its abundance of markets and obligatory congregation of punks.
There are plenty of restaurants in the area, particularly on Upper Street in Islington, which runs south of the tube station. The top end of the street is a decidedly boutique area featuring restaurants such as the ever evolving Zilouf's, which serves freshly prepared meals that marry flavoursome Eastern dishes to western dishes in a rather quirky atmosphere. There are also some more modest venues and a smattering of takeaways and cafes. In Highbury Severn Sisters Road is full of some of the more commonplace chain restaurants such as Subway and KFC.
If you're looking to explore the local nightlife, don't be expecting a wild night out in large clubs. The nightlife can mostly be found to the south of the station on Upper Road and towards the north-west on Holloway Road and mainly consists of bars and pubs, with a few particularly notable football pubs. The area is also great for live music, with venues such as The Garage, The Hope and Anchor and the Union Chapel (which is actually a church and hosts services during the day) all playing host to a range of different genres.
