If you're visiting London for a sight-seeing holiday then Heathrow Terminal 5 probably isn't your best option for somewhere to stay, being the westernmost tube station in the entire city. But if you're just looking for somewhere to lie your head for the night before an early morning flight then you can do little better. There are a selection of budget options, such as Heathrow Lodge, which is a great alternative to the floor of the terminal's check-in lobby, if only for the tea and coffee making facilities. More luxurious options include the Hilton London Heathrow, which is worth the three kilometre taxi ride for the pool alone. Heathrow Terminal 5 is at the end of the Piccadilly Line and is connected to London Paddington via the Heathrow Express, which takes just 15 minutes either way.
Airports aren't typically big tourist attractions, even if they are full of tacky souvenirs, and Heathrow Terminal 5 does not differ in this respect, but if architectural engineering is your thing then you might be interested to learn that it is the United Kingdom's largest free-standing structure. If you've got a day to kill between flights then you might want to take a trip south to Thorpe Park, which is London's resident theme park, full of roller-coasters and various rides. Windsor Castle is a slightly more laid back and elegant alternative and is just a few miles west of the city.
The terminal itself has a few dining options including the Gordon Ramsay Plane Food restaurant (see what they did there?), which isn't quite as plain as its name might suggest to the casual listener. There is also a good selection of restaurants and takeaways along the Bath Road, which is the main road that runs along the north of the airport. Of course, as with any British airport, the terminal is teeming with cafes. The restaurant of the Sheraton Heathrow hotel has also devised its own innovative jet lag vanquishing cuisine for those lost in a whirlwind of time zones.
If you're looking for a wild night out then, let's be honest, Heathrow Terminal 5 is hardly the best place to stay, but you can always go plane spotting instead. There are various pubs dotted around the airport, but any one of these will require a lengthy walk. It might be worth catching a taxi into the surrounding towns of Slough or Hounslow which, whilst neither are particularly busy nights out, at least have a few pubs and bars to choose from but are desolate of nightclubs.
