Located in Westminster Local Authority, Embankment Station first opened its doors on 30th May 1870. The station sits between Waterloo and Charing Cross on the Northern and Bakerloo lines and between Westminster and Temple on the Circle and District lines. There are 6 platforms at Embankment station and the station is situated in Zone 1. Close to several good Embankment hotels, the station has had a few name changes over the years. In fact, the stations 'Charing Cross', 'Strand', 'Aldwych', 'Trafalgar Square' and Embankment each swapped names and uses many times since they were first constructed. Described as a feat of 19th century engineering the station was designed by Sir Joseph Bazalgette and it incorporates a low level interceptor sewer. There's also an integrated wide road and a riverside path which were constructed at the same time as the station. The Thames Embankment area runs from Battersea Bridge in West London all the way though past Victoria Embankment beside the Houses of Parliament to Blackfriars Bridge in the east.
