Chalk Farm is in North London, near Camden Town with its canals and market, and close to Primrose Hill, an upmarket neighbourhood by Regent’s Park. There’s a brilliant contrast between these surrounding areas, with Camden being a bit gritty, full of punks and Goths, and Primrose Hill being popular with the fair and the famous; the great and the good. Chalk Farm hotels would suit young and adventurous travellers looking for a lively holiday. The area has great nightlife and there are many pubs, bars, music venues and restaurants. There’s a good selection of hotels near Chalk Farm Station, ranging from 2 to 4 stars. The Holiday Inn Camden Lock (****) has a lovely location in Camden Town, overlooking the Regent’s Canal. Prices at Chalk Farm hotels are medium to high, depending on the quality of the accommodation and its location. Hotels in the desirable areas around Regent’s Park tend to be expensive.
Chalk Farm is a tube station in the Borough of Camden. It’s on the Northern Line, in Travelcard Zone 2. It opened in 1907 and was designed by the architect Leslie Green. He was responsible for the design of many tube stations in the first decade of the 20th century and his buildings have a very recognisable Arts and Craft style. They are flat roofed, two story buildings with oxblood red terracotta blocks on the outside. At platform level, the walls are covered with tiles, spelling out the station name and forming geometric patterns.
Chalk Farm is less than 500 metres from Kentish Town West, a station on the London Overground line.
The Roundhouse is a legendary music venue near the station. The striking circular building started off as a steam engine repair shed in Victorian times and was transformed into an arts venue in the 60’s. The stage has seen many influential artists over the years including Jimi Hendrix, the Doors, Paul McCartney, the Who and Morrissey. Initially a bit rough and ready, the Roundhouse has recently been refurbished and now has all the facilities you would expect of a modern venue.
Music lovers are spoilt for choice around here – Barfly is another great venue nearby. It has hosted acts such as the Darkness, Franz Ferdinand and Coldplay. As well as bands it also has DJ club nights on Fridays and Saturdays.
Chalk Farm is the nearest tube station to Primrose Hill. This is an area of high land on the side of Regent’s Park which offers lovely views over London. The surrounding area is very fashionable with lots of trendy boutiques and cafes. Loads of celebs live around here so it’s a great place for star spotting.
The centre of Camden, with its canals and famous market, is also a short walk away.
