Canning Town is in East London, on the site of the former docks along the Thames. This is an area which has suffered economic deprivation over the years, but is now being regenerated thanks to investment and its proximity to new business, financial and entertainment developments in the Docklands. The station has a direct route to the ExCel Centre along the DLR and to the O2 Centre and Canary Wharf along the Jubilee Line.
Hotels near Canning Town Station are of a 2 and 3 star standard and you can find some relatively cheap rooms. In the wider Docklands area there is a lot of high quality accommodation including luxury serviced apartments and 4 star hotels. Canning Town Hotels would suit travellers who need a base that will allow easy access to ExCel, the O2 and Canary Wharf and won’t break the bank. However, it’s worth checking the prices on offer at the classier hotels in the area, as you can sometimes find a good deal.
Canning Town is a station in North East London. It's served by the Jubilee Line and the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) and is Travelcard Zone 3. There has been a station on this site since 1846, but the DLR did not arrive until 1994 and the Jubilee Line in 1999. There is a plaque at the station commemorating the Thames Ironworks and Shipbuilding Company, which stood nearby during the 19th century.
Rathbone Market is a historic market in the area which used to have a variety of different stalls, but has become run down in recent years. The area is currently being redeveloped to provide new shops, cafes and facilities. Star Park is a small green space nearby, which has a football pitch.
The Bridge House was a legendary rock venue in the area, welcoming acts such us Iron Maiden, Depeche Mode and Wasted Youth. It was knocked down in 1982 but Canning Town now has the Bridge House 2, a new venue for music and comedy.
The ExCel Centre is a national exhibition and conference centre, hosting a variety of events throughout the year. It is nearby, but other stations on the DLR are closer; Custom House is the best stop for ExCel.
The O2 Centre is also close by, with a huge arena, exhibition space, restaurants, bars and nightclub. It hosts huge concerts and gigs. But again, other stops are closer. North Greenwich, on the Jubilee Line, is the one to get off at. Canary Wharf, with its business and entertainments, is just one more stop along on the Jubilee Line.
