The Cambridge opened in 1930, which makes it one of the youngest theatres in the West End. It hosts a mixture of plays and musicals. A couple of its most notable productions were Half a Sixpence starring Tommy Steele in 1963 and the Olivier award winning musical Return to the Forbidden Planet, which began its 4 year run in 1989. The theatre also staged the first London production of Chicago in 1979.
The auditorium has a seating capacity of 1283 over 3 levels and in boxes. The Dress Circle and Upper Circle are set high, giving good visibility to those in the seats below. However, this does mean that the top tier is quite far from the stage. Some seats are classified as “restricted” or “side” views. There is a licensed bar on each level and a comfort cooling system in the auditorium.
For disabled guests, there is level access to the Stalls where there are 2 spaces for wheelchair users. Adapted toilets can be found in the corridor on this level. The auditorium has a Sennheiser infra-red hearing aid system.
The nearest tube station is Covent Garden (350m). Parking can be found at the Westminster City Council car park at Cambridge Circus or the NCP at St Martin’s Lane. Parking in the streets around the theatre is on meters and extremely limited.
