Blackhorse Road is a London Overground and Underground station in Walthamstow, East London. It’s on the Victoria Line in Zone 3. It was built in 1968 to accommodate the newly built Victoria Line. It is the least used station on that line. It has a mural of a black horse on the wall outside.
The William Morris Gallery is an 18th century property and the boyhood home of William Morris, the textile designer, artist, writer and socialist. It has a permanent exhibition on his life and displays his work, including wallpaper, fabric, carpet and stained glass. There are also changing exhibitions on display.
The Douglas Eyre Sports Centre has football, cricket and hockey pitches. It also has a large hall capable of holding 100 people for parties, receptions and events.
The station is very near the Lockwood and Maynard Reservoirs which was built in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. They are Sites of Special Scientific Interest and are popular with walkers, birdwatchers and fisherman. The Lea Valley Walk takes you past a chain of reservoirs, through marshland and onto the banks of the river.
The Lea Valley Experience Museum looks at the industrial rail history of the area since the 1880’s. There are a range of exhibits on show including steam engines, buses, trains and fire engines.
The Vestry House Museum is in Walthamstow Village, which is a conservation area. It has a display on the history of Waltham Forest including many old photographs. It also has a flower and herb garden.
