The earliest form of Bethnal Green's name Blithehale or Blythenhale comes from the Anglo-Saxon word 'healh' which means angle, nook or corner and the first part of the old word comes from 'Blithe' meaning happy. In this way Blithehale could be understood to mean 'happy corner'. The area was once marshland and dominated by an ancient forest named Bishopswood.
As any settlement depends on water it's believed that the 'happy corner' or Blithehale would have been a clearing in the forest near to a natural spring. In this case the natural spring was St. Winfred's well, in Conduit field at the north of the Green.
Over the years the area came to be called Bethan Hall Green and because the locals pronounced this Beth'n 'all Green, by the 19th Century it had become Bethnal Green.
