This is a lively and fashionable part of London with plenty of restaurants, pubs and cafes. Many celebrities live in the area including Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin, Kate Moss, Jude Law and Liam Gallagher. In the past, famous names such as Sigmund Freud and John Keats lived nearby, and there are museums to each of them to visit. There are a number of hotels near Belsize Park station to choose from. Those on a budget could try the Premier Inn London Hampstead (***) or the House Hotel, which is a bed and breakfast. There are also some 4 star Belsize Park hotels such as the Marriot Regents Park, which is a large hotel with a restaurant, gym, sauna and steam room, and the Langorf Hotel, which is a townhouse in a very quiet location. Belsize Park station is on the Northern Line, in Zone 2. It’s in the Borough of Camden, North London. The station opened in 1907 and has an attractive frontage featuring iron railings and Portland stone entrance posts. Its platforms are over 33 metres (108 feet) below ground. It is one of 8 tube stations which have deep level air-raid shelters beneath them, built during World War II. The shelter has separate entrances and was designed to hold over 9,500 people in bunk beds.
The Freud Museum was the home of Sigmund Freud when he and his family settled in London after escaping Nazi-occupied Austria. The centrepiece of the display is Freud’s study, preserved as it was during his lifetime. There is large collection of antiquities and furniture, including his famous psychoanalytic couch, where all his patients lay.
Another museum to a famous resident is found at Keats House, home of the poet John Keats. He wrote some of his most famous work here, including “Ode to a Nightingale”, and fell in love with the girl next door, Fanny Brawne.
To the north of the station is Hampstead Heath, a vast expanse of parkland with 790 acres (320 hectares) of hills, ponds, grass and woodland to explore. To the south and east of the Heath is Parliament Hill Fields, which has various sports facilities such as an athletics track and tennis courts. It also gives a spectacular view of the City of London to St Paul’s Cathedral.
Hampstead Town Hall is an interesting Victorian building which is now available for hire for events. It’s a popular venue for weddings and civil partnerships.
