Becontree was built after the First World War, under the national housing programme, Homes for Heroes. Prior to that, the area had been covered by market gardens. It was, when it was built, the largest municipal housing estate in the world, and it is still the biggest in Europe. This is a residential area of London. If you are looking for a hotel near Becontree Station, you will not find one within 2 miles. However, there are some options in the wider area. The Premier Inn Barking is the closest Becontree hotel, and offers its standard 3 star accommodation. A cluster of budget hotels and guest houses can be found in Ilford, which is not too far away; for instance, the Conifers Guest House and the Aberdeen Guest House. This is not an area where you will find luxury accommodation, but it would suit travellers on a budget who need good transport links in to the City.
Becontree Station is on the District Line, in Zone 5. It opened in 1932 as part of an extension of the District Line to Upminster, and the design of the building is typical of this time. It’s in Becontree, in the Borough of Barking and Dagenham. The station was refurbished in 2005.
There are a number of green spaces in this area to be enjoyed. Parsloes Park is right opposite Becontree Station. It has 143 acres of grass, trees, shrubs and rose beds, as well as a lake. It also has a playground, bowling green, tennis and basketball courts and football pitches. Goresbrook Park is a landscaped green space with basketball and 5-a-side facilities and a skateboard park. Mayesbrook Park has an athletics track and a boating lake. It also has woodland areas and a river running through it, with footpaths and play facilities.
Castle Green Leisure Centre has a range of sporting facilities, including a floodlit synthetic pitch, grass surface, dance studio with keep fit and gymnastic apparatus, gym, sports hall and outdoor courts.
Dagenham Leisure Park has a number of entertainment venues and restaurants including a cinema, bowling lane and bingo hall, as well as Chiquito Restaurant and Bar, Pizza Hut and McDonalds. There is also a mall at the next stop along the District Line, Dagenham Heathway. This indoor shopping centre has 32 retailers.
Eastbury Manor House is not too far away. This is a National Trust- owned historic property with a walled garden and Tudor-costumed guides. It is reputed to be the place where the Gunpowder Plot was hatched.
