Beckton is in the borough of Newham, East London, in the Docklands. It was formerly a heavily industrialised area with a gas works and sewage works. The gas plant has now closed and the area has been redeveloped. Most of the housing and buildings are modern, dating from 1982 and onwards. If you are looking for a hotel near Beckton Station, you won’t find any within a mile. However there are some accommodation options in the wider area if you need a Beckton hotel. The closest is the Travelodge London City Airport (***), where all the guest rooms have king size beds and family rooms sleep up to 4 people. A four star option is the Ramada Hotel and Suites London Docklands, which is on the waterfront, with views over the city. These hotels are all near London City Airport and would suit travellers who would like to stay close to the airport. They are also close to the Excel Centre.
Beckton is a station on the Docklands Light Railway (DLR), in Travelcard Zone 3. It is the eastern terminus of that branch of the DLR, which opened in 1994 to serve the Docklands area of East London. The station is open air, unmanned and tickets are bought at machines. It is in the Borough of Newham.
This part of East London has a number of green spaces to enjoy. Beckton District Park is a large expanse with woodland paths and wildflower meadows as well as a lake with a shingle beach. There is a millennium tree trail for children. New Beckton Park has sports pitches and a kid’s play area. King George V Park and Winsor Park are also smaller grassy areas nearby.
Terence Mc Millan Stadium is an athletics track and training ground for the Newham and Essex Beagles, one of the leading clubs in the country. Notable athletes include Christine Ohurougo and Daley Thompson. The stadium also has facilities for squash and football.
Nearby is the site of the Beckton Gas Works which opened in 1870 and was the largest such plant in the world until it closed 100 years later. Today some gas holders and a mountain of spoil, known as the Beckton Alps, remain. It has been used as a set for many film and TV projects including Stanely Kubrick’s “Full Metal Jacket”. Shopping centres now cover most of the site.
Docklands Equestrian Centre is a nearby riding school offering lessons to all abilities.
London City Airport is not far from Beckton Station, although there are other stations on the DLR that are closer.
