Barkingside is a suburban development in the borough of Redbridge, North-East London. It used to be part of Essex. It has a large Jewish Community and it is known for its connection with the businessman Alan Sugar, who has commercial interests in the High Street. Here you can find a swimming pool and recreation centre as well as various take aways and a few shops. There is a lack of hotels near Barkingside Station. The nearest ones are the Express by Holiday Inn London Newbury Park (***), a modern, purpose-built hotel, and the St Georgio (***), which is in a Georgian block. However, both are actually closer to other stations on the same loop of the Central Line. There is a cluster of guest houses and budget hotels around Ilford, further south, which will offer a bit more choice, but those looking for Barkingside hotels should bear in mind that this is not an area where you will find luxury accommodation.
Barkingside Station is on the Central Line, in Zone 4. It’s in North-East London, in the borough of Redbridge. It’s one of the few tube stations that is still in a relatively rural area. It opened in 1903, part of a loop from Woodford to Ilford that was designed to stimulate suburban growth. This was at first an overground railway link, but it was connected to the underground during the 30’s and 40’s. The station itself was not much altered. It’s a brick building with a cupola and a hammerbeam roof.
Fairlop Waters is a large country park and leisure facility. It comprises 300 acres of open countryside on the edge of London. It has both a 9 hole and 18 hole golf course, a floodlit driving range, a sailing lake, an angling lake and a smaller lake left to nature. Visitors can also go on wilderness walks.
Clayhall Park is also nearby. It has a bowling green, cricket and football pitches, tennis courts and two children’s play areas. It is a mature landscaped park with a formal rose garden, pagoda and avenue of horsechestnut trees.
The new state of the art cycling centre that has been built for the 2012 Olympics is not far away. It has purpose built road and off road tracks for all kinds of bikes, cyclists and abilities. Runners, skaters, nordic skiers and skateboarders are also welcome for circuit bookings or casual use. A number of fitness classes are also held and there are 3 rooms available for hire for events.
Barnardo’s was founded in Barkingside in 1866 and the charity’s headquarters are still here. The Barnardo’s Chapel is an interesting historic building.
