The Almeida Theatre is based in a 19th century building, which has had a number of purposes and owners over the years including the Islington Literary and Scientific Society, the Wellington Club and the Salvation Army. It has been a theatre since 1980. During that decade, its reputation grew as a home for fringe productions and touring companies.
From 1990 it began to produce its own theatre and came to be regarded as a centre of theatrical excellence. At the beginning of the noughties, the building got a multi-million pound restoration. The Almeida now has all the comforts of the 21st century and stages an eclectic mix of British and international drama, as well as an annual summer festival of opera, music and theatre.
The seating in the auditorium is bench style and there is space for 325 people over 2 levels. It is air conditioned and there is a café bar serving food from 12 noon until 7 pm and bar snacks until 10 pm.
There is level access to the foyer for disabled visitors through sliding doors and there are spaces for wheelchair users in the stalls. Adapted toilets are in the foyer by the lift.
The nearest tubes are Angel or Highbury & Islington (800m). There is limited parking in the surrounding streets but you can use the NCP at the Business Design Centre off Upper Street.
